#BroodingYAHero

A fun Twitter hashtag to follow is #BroodingYAHero, a parody twitter account poking gentle fun at the cliches that surround many main male characters and protagonists of YA novels. Some of my favorites were:

  • “I may be insensitive and cold usually, but when the plot hands me a puppy, small child, or musical instrument, you’ll see my softer side.”
  • “If you argue with me, I’ll kiss you to make you be quiet. You’ll find it romantic, not insulting, that I have zero interest in your opinion.”
  • “Our outfits are painstakingly described because teen fashion never changes. Your Uggs & Juicy Couture bedazzled velour sweats are so fetch.”
  • “If your gaze hasn’t been compared to a gemstone, force of nature, or celestial body, are you sure you’re a main character?”
  • “There are stories of a lone survivor from a royal family/magical race of beings… And you’re a lowly orphan. Total coincidence, right?”
  • “My love interest will insist she can’t dance and hates dresses. But then she’ll be forced to wear one and will turn into a graceful lady.”
  • “I’ve always seen you as ‘just one of the guys.’ But once you start wearing makeup and following traditional gender roles, I’ll fall for you.”
  • “Terms of endearment said in a foreign language (or with an accent) produce 270% more swoons from readers.”

What are some of the best and/or worst protagonist cliches you’ve read lately in a novel?

Wow, some of those are pretty bad because they’re so true!

Haha. If I was a character, I’d be brooding. πŸ˜‰
