Diversity Needed

26 May

I’ve done a few posts this year about different reading and writing hashtags on Twitter. Lately a couple of certain hashtags have caught my eye.

Namely, #GiveElsaAGirlfriend and #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend.

Basically, these two hashtags are promoting fans’ want of Queen Elsa from Disney’s Frozen to find love with another woman, and for Captain American from Marvel (which is also owned by Disney) to kiss a guy (rather than his dead girlfriend’s niece). Not only have these hashtags been trending, but people are also freaking out over the possibility of a lesbian couple in a scene from Finding Dory’s trailer.

I’m a follower of We Need Diverse Books on Tumblr, and I do my best to branch out regarding ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientations with my reading and writing on a regular basis. Seeing these hashtags trend on social media just solidifies the need to normalize all these beautiful sorts of people.

After all, everyone is diverse and different in his/her/their own way.

I love diversity and feel we need more of it, but I have conflicting feelings about those two tags in general.

I actually prefer the idea of Elsa remaining single. She’s a strong, independent woman, and I don’t think she needs a partner in order to run her kingdom. I think she’s perfect as a candidate to show young girls that they don’t need someone (a partner – male or female) in their life to be happy.

Captain America… He’s another story. I love his relationship with Bucky as a friend. (Note, I haven’t seen the new Captain America movie and don’t know how their relationship evolves – or doesn’t – in it.) There’s nothing wrong with two men or women being extremely close without it being sexual. Such a thing happens in real life sometimes.

Would I love to see more diversity in the Disney Princess and Marvel universe, yes. However, I’d love brand new characters who are that way from the start. There’s going to be a new princess soon. I can’t remember her name, but I haven’t heard much about her beyond the announcement of her movie if there is anything to be found. It would be cool if she was LGBT.

I quite like the idea of Elsa being without a partner as well. We have Merida, at least, for that. Brave wasn’t my favorite movie, but I enjoyed the part where Merida was “shooting for her own hand.” I agree in regards to Captain America, but I believe there’s evidence of him being at least bisexual in some of the comics. It’d be interesting to bring that aspect to the screen.
Of course, brand new characters and stories will always be a great way to go too! 🙂

In the end, if Marvel makes Captain America bi or gay, it won’t bother me… as long as it’s done well. People are going to pair in their mind who they want. There’s still lots of people pairing Hawkeye and Black Widow despite it being a known fact that Hawkeye is married with kids.
