Harry Potter Marathon

07 Jul

This weekend Rachel and I are having a Harry Potter Marathon with our good friend in her brand new house. We’re really excited for it with our plans involving butterbeer milkshakes, coloring books, and the movies rolling all through the night.

It’s amazing to me how this beloved fantasy series has lived on and evolved since its first publication almost 20 years ago. A theme park, movies, and now there’s a new play in London, with the script being published at the end of this month, not to mention the American Wizarding school and houses.

I wonder how many authors dream of the success J.K. Rowling has. Certainly she’s active with her fans, getting praise and critique alike for it and her new tidbits of Hogwarts lore. She seems to enjoy her success and the amazing family of fans she has created with her novels, but she’s also in the public eye just as often as any other famous figure.

What do you think? Would the recognition be amazing as an author, or would you be content with more quieter successes?

No way do I want that sort of notoriety. I’d be happy with a low mid level success. A little money, but complete obscurity in the world’s eye.

I love how you know what you want out of your writing career! 🙂 It’s definitely something that many have to think (or dream) about.

I hope Harry Potter becomes one of those immortal stories, and children and adults alike are still reading it a hundred years from now.

While there would be plenty of enjoyable things about the level of recognition Rowling has, I don’t think I’d be able to cope with that much attention myself.

I definitely agree with you! It’s a brilliant series that grows with the readers, and has wonderful lessons for all. 🙂

That sounds like a fun time! Have you ever been to the theme park?

To answer your question, I don’t know if I could handle the success. I like living a relatively quiet life. It would be great to be well known for producing something prolific, just as long as I’m not harassed by people in real life. Interesting question!

I have not been to the theme park, but it’s definitely on my bucket list! 🙂 Have you? How is it?
Thanks for your answer! I think it’s interesting how, as writers, we want to write to change the world, or at least a few readers. To be in that big of a spotlight, though, is something that I don’t think I’d be ready for either.

It’s amazing! We went when it first opened, and it was already awesome. The butterbeer is amazing, and we picked up a few wands. They’ve since added Diagon Alley and some other things so we’d like to go back sometime!
