I’m confused about one of these:

“However,” she added, shifting in her seat, “it’s appropriate to use a comma if there’s action in the middle of a sentence.”

In that case, “she added” is working as a speech tag, not an action tag, right? It’s really no different than.

“You punctuate this with a comma even though there’s an action after the speech tag,” he said, gesturing sternly.

Would you still you use commas for this:

“However,” she shifted in her seat, “it’s appropriate …”

    I don’t think that works …

In this case, the entirety of “she added, shifting in her seat,” is the action. That action is interrupting the sentence, “However, it’s appropriate to use a comma…” and the commas around the action signify that it’s all one sentence, whereas the next example in the image shows the action in the middle of two complete sentences. It’s true that the “she added” is a dialogue tag, but it’s being used with the action in the middle of the sentence. It would still work if you dropped the “she added.”

Basically, the action that the image speaks of is the narration that flows in between the words of dialogue. If the dialogue is one sentence with narration in the middle, then you would use commas. Your example also used the commas and periods correctly, with the narration completing the sentence itself. 🙂
