Creative Urges

21 Sep

What is it with getting urges to create something — a story, a song, a video — during a time when you can’t (like, say, at your day job)? Then when you finally get the time to do so, that urge is nonexistent?

Is there a way to get back that urge, that same passionate feeling when you do find yourself with the time to create? Do you just force yourself to write or sing or record?

I suppose making yourself create would be the best way to go (perhaps after a mental break from, say, your day job), yet I wonder if others worry about not doing their best work if they’re not passionate in the moment of its creation. Although, if you remember that excited urge to create while you’re working, it may return tenfold and really shine through your work.

This is more of a contemplative post than anything else. Anyone else go through this? Any suggestions for keeping that creative urge, or just channeling it again when you do have the time to create?

Oh lord yes I recognise that feeling. I make myself write now because experience has shown me that the longer I go without writing, the harder it is to get back into it. I stick a ‘I hate everyone,’ play list on and pull up the ‘Bad Writing Day’ file on my pc, and just write whatever is in my head. It’s not pretty, but I’m writing, and sometimes beautiful things are born there.

Those are FANTASTIC titles for a playlist and writing document! I think it’s important too to just keep truckin’ along. 🙂

Stormy seas and dead waters seem to just be part of the ride. And yeah, I have playlists and files for pretty much every state of mind.

    This is me every day.
Also, I still haven’t written that picture book idea that I thought of weeks ago. Remember I was going to write it and then our company came over? Yep.

Ugh, being social gets in the way all the time, doesn’t it? xD

I make myself do it. My boyfriend typically gets up at 0530 to do physical training wiht work, so I write from 0600-0700. It’s brutal sometimes. Sometimes I’m left staring at this page and I’m like ‘why was my head SO busy last night when I was trying to sleep AND I had crazy dreams, but I’m blank now?” I find that if I just pick up the pen and make myself start, something will come. And something (crap or not) is always better than nothing 😀

Ahh, that’s like my sister — she gets up so early to write and blog. Meanwhile, I’m dead to the world during the early hours, haha! I tend to stay up a little later at night for some writing when the house is nice and quiet (except for the young cat crashing into stuff because he can). 🙂

Haha yeah, with those wake up times, I have to get to sleep around 10ish, or I’m dead the next day :p That being said, I find that if I’m on autopilot, I’ll just do it: as the day goes on and I accumulate study hours, it can get harder to write :/

I’ve become a bit more of a night owl, so I try to write a little at night, but since I get up early, I’m very sleepy and don’t make as much progress as I would like.

That always makes it hard! Especially when the words start to swim before your eyes and all you can think is ‘sleep would be so nice.’
