Character Archetypes

04 May

If you were pegged as a character archetype, which one would you be?

I always enjoyed seeing these kinds of charts, trying to root what’s the basic motivation of a character beneath all of the ridiculous scenarios and situations they find themselves in. Do you actively think about your characters’ archetypes when you create them? Are you able to trace back your character’s main motivation to one of the basic archetypes? Which archetype is your favorite, or which do you tend to write the most of?

If I had to pick one from each quarter, if you will, my favorites would be the Jester, the Outlaw, the Explorer, and the Creator. What about you?

If I had to choose one for each category, I’d probably be Innocent (or Explorer because I do love that, I’m just afraid of my own shadow), Creator, Jester, and then either Hero or Magician.

Which ones do you think your favorite characters are, like George and Lilah?

George would be caregiver, everyman, sage, and hero. Lilah would be creator, explorer, definitely jester, and either hero or outlaw. I can see her being a little bit of both, lol.

Haha, those make sense! If you had to peg them as just one archetype, though, which would they be?

Wait, I can’t pick one from each category? That’s no fair.

Each character is supposed to be one archetype with the most basic motivation, haha! Obviously, this is just a guide, but that’s the point.

Oh, I get it! George would provide structure to the world and Lilah would leave a mark on the world. Yes.
